Painting FAQ for Southern Maine Homeowners
Wilson Paint Co is based in Gorham, Maine and proudly serves homeowners and businesses throughout Southern Maine. Below are answers to common questions about our interior and exterior painting services, estimate process, pricing, scheduling, and materials.
What does your painting estimate process look like?
Estimates are scheduled directly with the owner, who is also present on every job. To make scheduling easier, estimate appointments are typically arranged for early mornings, evenings, or Saturdays when needed.
During the visit, we review the scope of work, discuss the colors and finish you are considering, and inspect the space carefully to understand what will be required for the best possible result. We measure rooms, walls, ceilings, doors, windows, and other paintable surfaces while also noting any prep work such as caulking, patching, priming, or drywall repair.
For straightforward painting projects, pricing may be provided on the spot. For more detailed jobs, a written estimate is emailed within 2 to 3 business days.
Do you require a deposit?
Yes. To secure a spot on our schedule, we require a 33% deposit at booking. An additional 33% is due at the start of the project, and the final 33% is due after the work is complete and the client has confirmed they are satisfied with the results.
Do you handle both residential and commercial painting projects?
Yes. Wilson Paint Co handles both residential and commercial painting projects throughout Gorham and the surrounding Southern Maine area.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. We are fully licensed and insured for our clients’ protection and our own.
How do you determine painting project pricing?
Pricing depends on the size of the project, the condition of the surfaces, and the amount of prep work required. We consider the number of rooms, doors, and windows, ceiling and wall height, trim detail, crown molding, layout complexity, and whether surfaces need caulking, nail hole filling, priming, or drywall repair.
We also factor in issues such as screw pops, light sheetrock repair, or more extensive repairs that need to be addressed before painting begins. Our goal is to provide accurate pricing based on the labor and preparation needed to produce a long-lasting, professional finish.
Is there a minimum project size?
There is no minimum project size. However, for very small painting jobs that take less than a full day, we may still need to charge for most or all of a day’s labor in order to make scheduling the project possible.
What payment methods do you accept?
We accept check, cash, Venmo, and Cash App. We do not currently accept credit cards.
What paint brands do you use?
We primarily use premium Sherwin-Williams products because they provide the quality, durability, and finish our clients expect. We do not typically use big box store paints unless a client specifically requests it.
How many coats of paint do you usually apply?
We apply two coats of paint as our standard approach. This helps ensure proper coverage, durability, and a clean, consistent finish.
Do homeowners need to be home during the painting project?
No. Once the scope of work has been discussed and all details are confirmed, homeowners do not need to be home for us to complete the job. We take pride in working with professionalism, integrity, and clear communication from start to finish.
How long does paint take to dry and cure?
Dry time and cure time are different. Dry time refers to how long it takes for paint to become dry to the touch and ready for an additional coat. Cure time refers to how long it takes for the paint to reach full hardness and durability.
Most latex paints are dry to the touch within 1 to 2 hours and are usually ready for a second coat in about 4 hours. Full cure time is typically 21 to 30 days.
Most oil-based products are dry to the touch within 6 to 8 hours, although some dry faster depending on the product. Cure time is typically 7 to 14 days.
What is the best time of year for exterior painting in Southern Maine?
In Southern Maine, June through September usually offers the best conditions for exterior painting. Warmer temperatures and more consistent weather help support proper paint application, drying, and curing.
